ST. LOUIS / METRO EAST — September 29, 2026 — G’Mauri Hodges is 15 years old. He is a sophomore at Belleville West High School, a standout athlete on the school’s varsity football team, and a teenager whose future should be filled with the ordinary challenges and opportunities of growing up.
Instead, G’Mauri is in a hospital fighting to recover from catastrophic burn injuries suffered in a crash involving a vehicle transporting Belleville West students earlier this month.
G’Mauri has suffered burns to approximately 75% of his body. He underwent surgery today and remains hospitalized as he begins the difficult process of recovery. His family is focused on being by his side while facing an uncertain road ahead.

Those pursuits have been interrupted by a medical crisis of extraordinary severity.
After surgery yesterday, G’Mauri remains in the hospital, where he is still recovering. His family is confronting the emotional and practical burdens of having a child endure such extensive injuries while navigating an uncertain future.
For his loved ones, the priority is G’Mauri’s health and well-being. They are also seeking answers about the circumstances that led to his injuries and whether appropriate precautions were taken to protect the students being transported.
G’Mauri’s family issued the following statement:
“Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the first responders and good Samaritans who acted heroically that day, as well as the doctors, nurses, and medical staff who have been caring for G’Mauri. We will never forget the people who stepped up when our family needed them most. We are also grateful for the overwhelming support, prayers, and kindness we have received from the Belleville community and beyond. That support has meant the world to us during the most difficult time of our lives. Right now, our focus is on G’Mauri and helping him through the long road ahead. But we also need answers. These children were entrusted to others for their safety, and we need to understand how they ended up in this situation. We expect a thorough investigation, and we believe anyone whose actions or failures contributed to what happened must be held accountable. Our son deserves that, and so does every family that entrusts their child’s safety to others.”
Serious Questions About the Transportation
Arrangements
The crash occurred in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, near the intersection of Illinois Route 15 and Pocket Road. According to public reporting, the vehicle was transporting six Belleville West students and two adults when it collided with another vehicle, struck a traffic signal pole, and caught fire.
One student died in the crash, and the other occupants were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the transportation arrangement have raised serious questions about student safety and compliance with applicable requirements. Public reporting has identified MVP Transportation, Inc. as the company transporting the students and has raised questions about whether the vehicle was legally permitted to be used for pupil transportation.
JJ LEGAL is investigating the vehicle’s use, the driver’s qualifications, applicable transportation safety requirements, the arrangements under which the students were being transported, and the events leading up to the crash. The investigation will examine whether any acts or omissions by the transportation provider or other responsible parties contributed to the injuries G’Mauri sustained.
