On November 4, 2026, JJ Legal Injury Lawyers filed an 18-count federal lawsuit on behalf of the family of G’Mauri Hodges. G’Mauri is a 15-year-old Belleville West High School student and varsity football player who was seriously injured when the school van he was riding in crashed and caught fire. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois (Case No. 3:26-cv-01519) against the Board of Education of Belleville Township High School District 201.
The lawsuit alleges that the district used an unvetted transportation company, an unpermitted driver, and an unapproved 15-passenger van to carry students instead of a properly licensed school bus. It also alleges the district did this despite repeated warnings about the company’s drivers.
What Happened in the Belleville West School Van Crash
On the morning of September 23, 2026, a 15-passenger van carrying six Belleville West students and two adults crashed and caught fire. The crash happened at the intersection of Illinois Route 15 and Pocket Avenue in Cahokia Heights, Illinois. Several people were taken to area hospitals. Belleville West student Zer’Real Hinds, 17, died from injuries suffered in the crash, and G’Mauri Hodges was seriously hurt.
Our thoughts remain with the Hinds family and with every student and family affected by this crash.
What the Lawsuit Alleges Against School District 201
The complaint alleges a series of failures in how the school district hired, oversaw, and paid for student transportation:
- No-bid contract and no written agreement. The complaint alleges the district paid MVP Transportation $385,655.80 without a written contract, public bidding, or any safety review. It also alleges that staff emails described the service rate as “very cheap.”
- A driver without an Illinois school bus permit. The complaint alleges the driver MVP provided had two federal drug-trafficking convictions. It alleges he did not hold the Illinois school bus driver permit required to transport students, and that the district did not conduct required background checks.
- Warnings about MVP drivers that went unaddressed. The complaint alleges that district staff received complaints about MVP drivers before the crash. These included reports of a driver swerving, falling asleep at the wheel, and having beer cans in the vehicle’s cup holders. The complaint alleges the district kept approving payments to MVP anyway.
- A van that did not meet school transportation rules. The complaint alleges that Illinois State Board of Education guidance prohibits transporting students in unmarked 15-passenger vans. It also alleges the van lacked basic safety equipment, such as a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit, and was operating with inadequate insurance coverage.
These are allegations in a civil complaint and have not yet been proven in court.
“Keeping children safe is a school’s most basic responsibility. This tragedy was entirely avoidable.”

Why School Bus and Student Van Safety Rules Matter
When families send their children to school or to a school activity, they trust that the district has made sure the vehicle and the driver are safe. In Illinois, drivers who transport students on school buses must hold a school bus driver permit, which requires a criminal background check. Federal safety regulators have also long warned against using 15-passenger vans to carry students, and new 15-passenger vans cannot be sold to schools for that purpose.
These school bus safety rules exist for a reason. A district can skip them by hiring an unvetted contractor, using an unapproved van instead of a school bus, or ignoring complaints about a driver. When that happens, children can pay the price.
